Physiotherapy for Pregnancy and Labour (Prenatal)

At River Physio, our physical therapists are committed to helping you achieve a healthy labour process. During pregnancy, your body undergoes various physiological and musculoskeletal changes. Your ligaments become more pliable, blood volume increases and even your posture changes. This can be associated with gestational diabetes, breathing problems, musculoskeletal issues such as back pain, pelvic pain, leaking urine, feeling of pressure or heaviness in vagina.

A pregnant woman should prepare for the delivery in the same way that a sportsperson trains months for a competition or a student prepares for exams.

We aim to facilitate a more flexible birth canal for the baby to pass through, with minimal resistance to the baby and therefore less soft tissue and joint damage to you. However this should be achieved only by a proper and safer prenatal exercise program. This is not the time for experimenting. You need an expert to assist you.

At River Physio , our well trained physiotherapists help look after your body during pregnancy, and to recover after childbirth by prescribing a safe and healthy prenatal program. The program includes

  • Conditioning the heart and lungs with gentle aerobic exercises within your safe heart rate limits.
  • Exercises for spinal & abdominal muscles to manage back & neck pain, strains and sprains.
  • Strengthening perineal muscles to get you strong and prepared for labour.
  • Soft tissue release to decrease your muscle soreness.
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques and diaphragmatic and intercostal breathing techniques, relaxation positions to perform your daily activities with ease and primarily to manage breathing while you push during the labour.

AFTER DELIVERY CARE FOR MOTHERS (Postnatal)

Bringing new life into this world is a life changing experience. But sometimes it can leave a new mom a little beaten up.

“Remember you were only pregnant and not sick for 9 months! Pregnancy is not an illness”.

After your childbirth, the responsibility increases. Already a shattered body, stretched ligaments, weak perineal muscles, leaking urine, pain around the birth canal, added weight and quite often the sombre mood does not seem to help you. And now you have, round the clock duty to take care of your beloved child.

Our team at River Physio completely understands what is going on with you. We will assess you and enlist your problems. Slowly we will encourage you to start a little bit of exercises as soon as possible after delivery. We will provide you more information on how to look after yourself and about what things you need to be careful of.

The physiotherapist in charge of you will carry the exercises forward with gradual progressions. It will help treat problems that have occurred because of pregnancy and help prevent future physical problems. We will help you look after yourself while you look after your child.
